No court nearby? Courts always booked? A portable net turns a driveway, a gym floor or a quiet backyard into a place to play. Here is why one is worth having, how to set it up, and how to check it is at the right height.
Why a portable net
A portable net lets you play where you already are. The Mint Pro Portable Pickleball Net is made for pickleball courts, driveways, gym floors, backyards, community centers, schools and recreation facilities. Any suitable flat surface works.
It is also easy to move. The whole system weighs 16.5 lb (7.5 kg) and packs into its own Oxford carry bag, so it is easy to carry to the car or a club storeroom.
What is in the box
- One 22 ft pickleball net
- One alloy steel frame
- One reinforced center support
- One Oxford zipper carry bag
- Assembly instructions
The frame is powder-coated alloy steel with a wide base. The net is reinforced 15-ply polyethylene with reinforced PVC side sections and a white Oxford fabric top edge. Adjustable tension straps and the center support help hold the height and reduce sagging.
How to set it up
Always follow the assembly instructions in the box. In general terms:
- Pick your spot. Choose a flat, clear, safe surface with room to move around the court.
- Build the frame. The sections interlock with push-button connections, so you do not need any tools.
- Fit the net. Attach the net to the frame and add the center support.
- Tighten it. Use the adjustable tension straps to take out sag.
- Check the height. See the next section.
When you are done, take it apart and pack every piece back in the carry bag.
Check the height: 36 inches and 34 inches
The official USA Pickleball rulebook sets the net height:
- At the sidelines: the top of the net must be 36 inches above the playing surface where the net crosses the outer edge of each sideline (with a quarter inch allowance either way).
- At the center: the top of the net must be 34 inches (again within a quarter inch). If there is a center strap, it counts in the measurement. (Rules 3.B.6 and 3.B.7.)
The rulebook also says net posts should be 22 feet apart (within an inch), measured inside post to inside post, and that the net itself should be at least 21 feet 9 inches long.
The Mint Pro net is 22 ft wide, with a listed height of 36 inches at the posts and 34 inches at the center, the same numbers the rulebook uses. The rulebook measures 36 inches at the sidelines, not the posts, so measure there. After every setup, grab a tape measure and check both sidelines and the center. Adjust the straps if you are off.
Your starter pack: net, paddles and balls
A net is only half the game. If you are building a home court kit, add a four-paddle bundle so everyone can play doubles right away.
- Movemint I & Movemint II 4-Pack with Balls, $129.95. Mint calls it everything four players need to start a game, in one box: two Movemint I RED paddles (16mm core, control profile, enlarged sweet spot), two Movemint II BLACK paddles (13mm core, power profile, integrated edge guard) and a 4-pack of Cannonballz 40 Hole Outdoor balls.
- Movemint I & Movemint II 4-Pack, $114.95. The same four paddles without balls. Mint lists it as ideal for families, doubles groups, clubs and anyone building a home court kit.
- Mademoiselle & Monsieur 4-Pack, $234.95. A matched four-paddle set of Mademoiselle and Monsieur paddles, both with a T700 carbon fiber face, thermoformed 16mm polypropylene core and a textured grit surface. Mint lists it as a complete doubles set for couples, regular partners and families.
Then pick balls for where you will play:
- Outdoors: Cannonballz 40 Hole Outdoor balls, 4-Pack ($14.95) or 10-Pack ($22.95). Rotation molded, single-piece seamless, 40 holes, fluorescent optic-ember.
- Indoors: Cannonballz 26 Hole Indoor balls, 4-Pack ($12.95) or 10-Pack ($19.95). Two-piece injection molded, 26 holes.
Net, four paddles and balls: that is a full game of doubles wherever you set up.
