Should Beginners Use Elongated Paddles?

Elongated paddles get a lot of attention for the reach and power they offer, but there's a real trade-off for anyone still learning the game. Here's what that trade-off actually looks like, and two Mint Sport paddles that take a different approach.

Why Standard or Wide-Body Shapes Are Usually Recommended First

Beginners are generally advised to focus on consistency first, and a standard or wide-body paddle makes that easier. The wider face provides a larger sweet spot and more forgiveness, which helps you develop consistent contact and control without the frustration of constant mishits. Most equipment specialists and instructors point new players toward standard or wide-body shapes for exactly this reason.

The Real Trade-Off With Elongated Paddles

It's entirely possible for a beginner to play with an elongated paddle, but it comes with real trade-offs. The sweet spot is smaller and narrower, so off-center hits lose more power and control than they would on a wider face. The extra length and higher swing weight also make quick hands at the kitchen line more challenging, which reduces maneuverability right when you need it most. On top of that, elongated paddles generally have a steeper learning curve, since getting the most out of one requires mechanics that most beginners haven't developed yet.

Mint Sport's Two Wide-Body Paddles

Most of our lineup, the Maestro, Mon Ami, Megalodon, Monsieur, Mademoiselle, and Mon Mirroir, is elongated. But we do have two wide-body options worth knowing about.

The Mon Marteau is a 13mm paddle, averaging around 225 grams, built with a red kevlar and carbon fiber weave. It also carries our 3D Spin watermark, which adds extra spin and increases dwell time.

The Magnifique uses 12K carbon fiber over a white polypropylene core, with a 10mm core thickness.

Here's the honest caveat: both of these lean toward thinner, power-oriented cores, 13mm and 10mm, rather than the 16mm-and-up range generally recommended as a beginner starting point. So while their wide-body shape offers more forgiveness than an elongated paddle, their core thickness pulls in the opposite direction, favoring power over the extra control a thicker core provides.

So Should a Beginner Buy Elongated?

As a general rule, no, not as a first paddle if you can avoid it. A standard or wide-body shape with a thicker, more forgiving core is still the more straightforward starting point. If you're choosing among our own lineup, it comes down to a real trade-off: an elongated paddle with a control-friendly 16mm core, like the Monsieur or Mademoiselle, or a wide-body paddle with a thinner, more power-leaning core, like the Mon Marteau or Magnifique. There isn't one paddle in our current range that checks every box for a total beginner, and we'd rather tell you that plainly than oversell one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mint Sport make a true beginner-shaped paddle?

The Mon Marteau and Magnifique are our wide-body options, which offer more forgiveness in shape than our elongated paddles. Their cores are thinner and lean more toward power than the 16mm-plus range usually recommended for beginners, so it's a trade-off either way.

What if I've already been learning on an elongated paddle?

It's not a fatal mistake, plenty of players learn just fine on one. It's just a steeper curve. If you're finding mishits especially punishing or struggling with quick exchanges at the kitchen line, paddle shape may be part of why.

Is elongated ever a good idea for a total beginner?

It's not the usual first recommendation. Elongated paddles tend to suit players better once they've developed reliable contact and want the added reach and power that shape offers.

Final Thoughts

Standard or wide-body shapes are the more forgiving starting point for most beginners, and that's still true even within our own lineup, most of which is elongated. If you're just starting out, weigh shape and core thickness together rather than assuming any one paddle checks every box. The Mon Marteau and Magnifique offer the wide-body forgiveness, just with a more power-leaning core than the usual beginner recommendation.
