When pickleball players compare paddles, static weight usually gets the most attention. A paddle weighs 8 ounces, another weighs 8.3 ounces, so the heavier one must be harder to swing—right?
Not necessarily.
Two paddles with nearly identical static weights can feel dramatically different because where that weight is positioned matters just as much as how much weight there is. That is where swing weight and twist weight come in.
Those two measurements become especially interesting with modern Gen 4 foam paddles, where the internal construction can distribute mass differently across the face, perimeter, throat, and handle.

Twist weight tells you about stability.
When the ball hits the center of a paddle, the force is relatively well aligned with the paddle's centerline. But pickleball rarely gives you perfect contact every time. A fast drive might catch the upper-right portion of the face. A rushed volley might contact the edge.
An off-center impact creates torque that tries to rotate the paddle around its long axis.

This distinction is worth remembering:
Swing weight = resistance to moving the paddle.
Twist weight = resistance to rotating the paddle on an off-center hit.
A paddle can have a low swing weight and still have respectable torsional stability. It can also have a high swing weight without necessarily being exceptionally stable against twisting.
That is because the two measurements describe rotation around different axes and are affected by different aspects of mass distribution.
For players shopping for Gen 4 foam paddles, this is one of the most useful ways to read a spec sheet.
Instead of asking only, "How much does this paddle weigh?" ask:
How does that weight behave?
Why Static Weight Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Static weight remains useful, but it is only the starting point.
The GhostX is listed at approximately 230 ±5 grams, yet that number alone does not tell you why the paddle is designed to feel fast in the hand. Its 111.03 kg/cm² swing weight gives you much more information about how its mass interacts with your swing, while its 6.02 kg/cm² twist weight tells you more about its torsional response on off-center contact.
