
"Edge foam" and "edge guard" sound like they might be the same thing described two ways. They're not. One protects the outside of your paddle. The other is a construction feature built into the inside of it, and it changes how the paddle actually plays.
Edge Foam vs TPE Edge Guard: Two Different Things
A TPE edge guard sits on the exterior perimeter of the paddle, the visible bumper that protects the edge from chips and floor contact, the kind we've recommended for beginners in past articles.
Edge foam is something else entirely. It sits inside the thermoformed construction of the paddle, not on the outside. Specifically, edge foam refers to polyurethane or EVA foam injected into the perimeter of the paddle's core, typically surrounding a traditional polypropylene honeycomb interior.
How Edge Foam Actually Works
Edge foam is a defining characteristic of thermoformed paddles, often labeled Gen 3. During construction, the paddle's face sheets are heated and molded into a single unibody shell that encapsulates those foam-filled edges, rather than gluing separate pieces together.
The functional effects are real: an expanded sweet spot, increased stability, vibration dampening, and improved durability. That combination is why edge foam shows up so often in paddles built around performance and forgiveness rather than raw pop alone.
Edge Foam vs Thermoforming: Related, But Not the Same
These two terms get used interchangeably a lot, but they describe different things. Edge foam specifically refers to the foam-injection perimeter wall inside the core. Thermoforming refers to the bonding process, heat and pressure inside a mold, that fuses everything into a single unified body. One is what's inside the paddle. The other is how it all gets fused together. A paddle can be thermoformed without necessarily relying on edge foam specifically for its performance characteristics, but in practice, the two are often paired.
